Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on the 9th of August, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. When she was a kid she performed in the New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark. When she turned fifteen, Houston was singing professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother in Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. In the year 1981, she was a model and appeared on the Seventeen Cover. Also, she provided back vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. The quality of her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several major record labels, including Arista, with which she was signed in 1982, and continued to work for the remainder of her life. Whitney Houston was her debut album. Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album by a debut artist.
